Yandex.Radar shows you how people use the internet in Russia and other countries

Reports on search engines and internet technologies

To calculate the market share of search engines, browsers, device types and operating systems, we track what percentage of site sessions they have provided in the total traffic in the region. To do this we analyze summary data for Yandex.Metrica tags. Reports on technologies and search engines are available for four countries — Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Turkey.

Statistics for the share of search engines and browsers can be seen broken down by operating system and device type. For example, you can compare the share of Chrome Mobile browser on iOS and Android or on tablets and smartphones.

Data source

Calculations are based on the generalized statistics of traffic to all sites with a Yandex Metrica tag. Yandex Metrica is a leading Russian web analytics system, which was launched in 2009. According to W3Techs, Yandex Metrica ranks among the top 5 web analytics systems for the number of domains that have its tag installed.

Methodology

In order to provide accurate measurements, we exclude sessions from all Yandex sites from all Yandex.Radar reports. The data may also be adjusted for inaccuracies that appear as a result of various technological changes. For example, during global transition to the https encryption we introduced a correction to compensate for some older browsers losing referrers of the traffic from HTTPS to HTTP.

Traffic is measured in sessions. The geographical origin for a session is determined by the site user’s IP address, while the session time and date is provided by the tag’s set time zone. Meanwhile, the user’s browser, operating system and device type is found via the User Agent string. The search engine is determined by using the same principles as the “Search engines” report in Yandex.Metrica.

What is a session?
A session is a sequence of actions performed by a single user on a site that has Yandex.Metrica’s tag installed. Page views, clicks on external links, file downloads and other types of site interactions are factored into a session. A session begins with the user’s transition to the site and ends when the user is inactive for a certain amount of time (30 minutes by default). However, tag owners can set their own inactivity time limit. Learn more about sessions in the Yandex.Metrica help center.

Yandex.Radar reports for search engines and browsers contain statistics starting from January 1, 2015, while reports for operating systems and device types start from April 1, 2015. You can choose any date range for analysis up to the last fourteen days.

In the Technology section, Yandex and Google site sessions are calculated as a total across all products that include a browsing feature. For Yandex: Yandex Browser, Yandex with Alice (app), and Yandex Start (app). For Google: Google Chrome and the Google app. When selecting the "Desktop" device type, only visits from Yandex Browser and Google Chrome browser are displayed.
